Why I Keep Doing This

Because mediation is confidential, I can never discuss specifics. Just recently, we had an in-person mediation involving outstanding lawyers and numerous international carriers - the best of the best.
Everyone in the room cared deeply about serving their clients’ interests. They advocated passionately. It was long. It was difficult. It required patience, persistence, and trust in the process.
And in the end, we resolved the case. Great work by the lawyers. People occasionally ask why I continue doing this work at this pace.
The answer is simple: because of moments like this and notes like the one below from an exceptionally talented young lawyer.
“I also wanted to acknowledge your incredible gift as a mediator. You are truly the best of the best. Your legal knowledge, your history as a lawyer, your wisdom, and your ability to navigate difficult waters are exceptional. You serve both plaintiffs and defendants in a way that very few can. Please never retire. The profession is better because of you.”
I was deeply honored to receive those words. Mediation is not easy work. It requires preparation, patience, judgment, and the willingness to sit with uncertainty while helping others navigate it.
Messages like this are meaningful, not because of praise, but because they reflect what matters most to me: showing up prepared, treating everyone with respect, and helping people solve difficult problems.
Thank you for the kind words. Now back to work.
